Construction Details
Each track begins as a 1”x 4” frame, 12” on center, screwed together, with dado joints. ½” MDF is then glued to the framework. For flat tracks, the MDF is then covered with plastic Formica type laminate (Wilsonart brand). For “Cutout” tracks, the laminate is applied to sheets of ¼” MDF so it can be separate from the ½” table surface and allow for flexibility in banking and elevations.
At this point, a template is made of the track shape and the first slot groove is routed to a depth of .175”. The remaining slot grooves are routed with a fixture, which rides in the previous groove. When all slots are finished, another fixture is used to rout the wire grooves.
The rails are installed using .060”wide x.125”deep, round edge tempered steel wire. The wire is first heated and bent in order to pass through the table surface allowing for electrical connection. Glue is applied to the wire grooves and the wire is installed to .012” – .015” rail height. Rails are continuous with no additional power taps needed. This round edge wire is so smooth that pickup shoe wear is virtually non-existent.
Due to shop space restrictions, we are currently not building tracks with tables larger than 5’x18’ and all of our tracks are constructed in one piece (table legs are removable). We also do not sell non-railed track.
